About Oliver McMahon

Oliver McMahon in studio

Oliver McMahon is an oil painter specializing in vibrant landscapes and subtle still lifes using traditional techniques...

Oliver McMahon studied drawing, painting, and sculpture at Southampton College, graduating in 1974. Early in his career, he worked as the park artist for Adventureland Amusement Park, fabricating ornamental fiberglass facades and painting the carousel and rides. He later worked at the Bronx Zoo as an exhibit construction artist, creating full-sized trees from fiberglass and epoxy and sculpting concrete cliffs in the Jungle World building.

Afterward, Oliver took a 30-year break from art to pursue a career in electrical engineering, working for MIT, AMCC, Lockheed Martin, and BAE Systems.

Now retired, Oliver is happy to devote his time to painting again. He paints scenes from nature, working in his studio from photos he takes on site during walks along the New England coast and countryside. His paintings reflect his appreciation for the quiet beauty of nature and the changing light of the seasons.

Oliver has long enjoyed rock climbing, sailing, and flying, activities that have given him a deep appreciation for the landscapes he paints. His time spent climbing has informed his understanding of rock formations, sailing has deepened his connection to the water, and flying has offered him a unique perspective on the sky and land below. These interests naturally flow into his art, where rocks, water, and sky are often featured subjects, explored through the changing light and moods of nature.

Oliver’s work has been shown at the Greely Park Art Show and other local venues, and he offers both original paintings and fine art prints.

When not painting, Oliver enjoys exploring local nature preserves, studying the play of light on water and rock, and finding new inspiration for future paintings.
